How Shakeys Pizza Roll Is a T-Rex Named After Donald Trump
Posted On August 6, 2021
It looks like Shakeys pizza rolls.
But that’s the name of a restaurant in Oklahoma that has been selling its namesake pizza roll in a restaurant that also sells Trump T-shirts and Trump branded goods.
That restaurant, which opened up in 2016, has had the Trump T logo on the menu for years, but the name was changed in 2016 when the owners were asked to make it more generic.
They’ve been doing it ever since, even making an entire pizza roll out of the Trump logo.
“I’m not a Trump fan,” the owner, Scott Gugger, told ABC News.
“But I like the name.
I thought, Why not?
And that’s what we did.”
In 2017, Guggers son and wife, Matt and Katie, opened their first restaurant, The Pizza Express, in Oklahoma City.
“The Pizza Express is a small business,” Gugges son told ABC.
“We have no marketing, no advertising.
We just do what we do.
We’ve been around a long time.
I think that’s a good business model to follow.”
Guggers sons business partner, Michael, told the Oklahoman, “I think it’s important to remember that Donald Trump did not run for office because he was a Trump supporter.
I’m sure there were some times when we had Trump signs and some times we didn’t, but he was not a supporter of our company.
He was a supporter for other reasons, but that’s not what we were doing.”
Guga’s Pizza is now one of five pizza-related businesses that sell Trump T shirts, Trump branded products and other products from Trump branded businesses in Oklahoma, according to ABC News affiliate KFOR.
“We have a really loyal clientele,” Guga said.
“They come in here and they order the pizza.
It’s a great deal.”
Trump himself has been on the business end of a few of the products, including the Trump-branded “Trump Pizzas” and the “Trump T-shirt.”
The “Trump Pizza” shirt, which Gugge sells at his restaurant, has been in stores for nearly a year.
He said the shirt was originally designed for a business meeting, but it became popular in other locations because people were buying it at gas stations and restaurants.
“You get a lot of compliments for it,” Guge told KFOR, which asked the Guggs to describe what they think about Trump and the Trump brand.
“It’s a little bit of a political statement,” Katie said.
“They’re not going to let Trump win.
That’s the point,” Matt said.
In May 2018, Guga was arrested for DUI in Oklahoma.
He pleaded no contest to reckless driving, a misdemeanor charge, and was sentenced to six months of home detention, which means he won’t be allowed to own a vehicle for a year, the Okla.com reported.
Gugger told KWTV that he thinks the incident was a misunderstanding.
“I have no recollection of anything,” he said.
The restaurant was shut down for a while and closed, but reopened in January 2019.
“The PizzaExpress has been operating since November, so I’m not sure what’s going on there,” Katie told KTV.
“That’s why we have a different name.”ABC News’ John Branca contributed to this report.
